Did you know that Aberdeenshire alone had no less than three universities towards the close of the 16th century? There was one at Fraserburgh, plus King’s and Marischal Colleges in Aberdeen itself. This was at a time when the whole of England had only two universities, namely Oxford and Cambridge.

Union Street is Aberdeen’s main thoroughfare. Situated on the North Sea coast at the mouth of the rivers Don and Dee, this port is Scotland’s third largest town in terms of population

Many of Aberdeen places of interest are within walking distance of each other. The east end of Union Street is the former centre of the early settlement, indicated by the mercat cross. Aberdeen is a splendid city offers many visit attractions, the 17th-century Tolbooth or Old Town House, the Flemish medieval-style turrets on the adjacent New Town House, The Shiprow opposite, one of the oldest streets in the city leads down to the harbour; also Aberdeen Art Gallery has excellent collections of 18th to 20th century work, close by is St Nicholas Kirk the first place of worship in Aberdeen, founded in the 12th century; and Aberdeen Maritime Museum the 16th-century Provost Ross’s House is a unique survivor on the old Shiprow, between the market place and quayside.
Other Aberdeen attractions, The Winter Gardens at the Duthie Park are popular with families. Hazlehead Park also has a domestic animal zoo, as has Doonies Farm. Most of Aberdeen's parks have good play-grounds. like the one on the Beach Esplanade, where there is also a traditional fairground in the summer

Other attractions in Aberdeen is St Nicholas shopping centres. This prime retailing area has a wide variety of some of the best known high street names. The nearby Academy shopping centre has some favourite haunts, including individual shops. New shops in cobbled Belmont Street include the big name fashion and lifestyle brands, White stuff and Fat Face.
