Stirling Castle – The Strategic key to the kingdom of Scotland.
Still preserves its impregnable air, rising out of the ‘carselands’- former marshlands. Downhill from the castle, the Old Town has the air of an old established Scottish burgh, with its mercat cross, tolbooth and Church of the Holy Rude as the ancient symbols of commerce, the law and the church. Further down, Victorian developments begin with handsome shopping streets and a railway station, and spread into the suburbs.
William Wallace’s most famous victory was at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, where, within sight of the English-held Stirling Castle, Wallace’s men fell upon and defeated the opposing forces while they attempted to cross the narrow
